Am I able to have driving lessons in my own/family or friends car?
Under certain circumstances, customers may want to receive lessons in their own/family vehicle. This is a good idea where the car will be used for a Driver’s Test. It is also a good idea when a learner has a new car and wishes to familiarise themselves with it prior to licensing. Safe Drive Driving School is able to offer customers training in their vehicle, provided the vehicle is registered, roadworthy and comprehensively insured.
Prior to any training being conducted in the customer’s vehicle, the instructor should inspect the vehicle for its roadworthiness. The inspection should include, but is not limited to, a check of the following items;
- the registration label is valid, current, intact and displayed appropriately
- the vehicle is comprehensively insured and the customer’s insurance company is notified that it will be used by a driving instructor to conduct training in
- The tyres:
- all indicators, headlights and brake lights are working
- seats and seat belts are in good working order and are not damaged or twisted
- any loose items in the cabin of the vehicle are stowed in the cargo (boot) area
- the windows and interior are clean
- the vehicle has sufficient petrol to last the course of the lesson (minimum requirement – a quarter of a tank)
How can I get G1 license
To apply for a license, you must be at least 16 years old, pass a vision test and pass a test of your knowledge of the rules of the road and traffic signs. After you pass these tests, you will enter Level One and get a Class G1 license.
You can take your written G1 test at your local Drive Test Centre. You do not need an appointment to write your test.

Once you have your G1 license , now you are ready to start driving lessons.
What documents are needed for G2 test?
You will need:
- To be over 16-years-old.
- Identification:
- A personal ID, like a health card
- A foreign or Canadian passport, citizenship card, a Permanent Residency Card (PRC) or other permanent or temporary immigration documents.
- Money
- Time
- A car (for the road tests)
- To pass tests including an eye exam.
How long do you have to wait to get your G2?
If you are a new driver trying to get your G2 license for the first time, you have to wait 8 to 12 months after you pass the G1 written exam. If you complete a certified driving school, you only have to wait for 8 months instead of the full year.
Can I get my G2 faster?
In general, G1 drivers need to wait a whole year before they can go for their G2, but you can speed up the process by taking, and passing, a government-approved driver’s education course. With a driver’s education course under your belt, you can cut the wait time down to eight months
Can you drive on 400 with G2?
Yes. A G2 license holder can drive on any hi-way, including 400 series hi-ways, 407, QEW, and two-lane hi-ways in Ontario. However, G2 license holders do have restrictions that limit when they can drive and the number of passengers they can carry.
Can I buy a car with a G2?
There is no restriction on buying a car. But in order to put a plate number on the vehicle and drive on the roads, you are required to buy insurance too. The primary driver on the policy must be someone with a G2 or G license and it cannot be a G1 driver.
What is G license
A Full G License, also known as a Graduated G License, is what drivers receive after completing a GDL (Graduated Driver Licensing) program. These programs are mainly for young or inexperienced drivers and offer training and a supervised driving experience so they will feel safer and more confident while on the road.

How long do I have to get my G?
You can take the Class G road test after driving with your G2 for 12 months. You do have 5 years, though, from the time you got your G1 to get your full G license. You’ll have to declare your driving experience when you go for the G test as it relates to the more advanced skills that the G road test covers.
Can I go for my G road test directly after getting G1 license
If you are new in Canada and you have a valid driving license from your back home and you having this license more that for years, you have one chance to apply for your G Road test.
